Bergen County is turning a landfill into a park -Overpeck County Park. The project, which has come under some criticism for using questionable fill on a site that already is a dump, is near completion.

The editors at The Record came to Jon and I with an idea to produce a pre-Election Day video on how the local African-American community felt about a Barack Obama candidacy.
After brainstorming with some news editors, and a getting a good dose of input from Jerry DeMarco, we came up with the concept to ask a select group of persons the exact same question: "As an African-American, what does Barack Obama's candidacy mean to you?"
I then carefully began to search for individuals to interview, looking for people who were not well known or frequently quoted in the paper, but had something to say. We knew we wanted some local leaders, but mainly we wanted to hear from everyday folks. We wanted to give them a chance to weigh-in and give voice to the significance of this historic election.
In finding subjects for the project, I relied heavily colleagues like Mike Feeney, Liz Llorente, Doug Crouse, as well as drawing on many contacts of my own from my days of doing Picture This. After making dozens of calls, following leads, putting in countless hours of pre-shoot production, I hit the streets.
In shooting the project, I tried not to get into who everyone thought would win, nor did I want to get into politics and policy, but rather to focus on what the nomination meant. I tried to explain to everyone that this was a cultural piece, not a political one. Considering our nation's history on race-relations, we knew there would be strong feelings and much would be considered.
We also set out to produce a video that was sound-bite driven. Jon and I whittled-down nearly 3-hours of tape to roughly 4-minutes of rapid-fire tidbits, striving for maximum impact. We hadn't produced a piece like this before, and it certainly was very different from our typical editing style of putting strong B-roll shots, over A-roll commentary. We focused solely on the people and what they had to say. Nothing else.
All totaled, I interviewed 25 people, across Bergen and Passaic Counties, over a 7-day period. Here's what they had to say....

Eighteen hours. Thirty-five pslips. Five videos. Six races. Fourteen candidates. We covered it all. And we did it for two dailies and a website that was hungry, requiring constant updates. Web hits for Tuesday and Wednesday were record breaking - 307,225 for Tuesday and 360,866 for Wednesday.
Everyone worked hard on Election day. But the unsung heroes of the day were the day-side guys. They were tasked with priming the websites’ “pump.”
Carmine, Liz, Tariq, and Sarah, between them, had to make stills and video of at 15 separate polling places as well as a special trip to cover breakfast at a local diner with Lautenberg and Pascrell. They had to get the footage back to Hackensack immediately after shooting for an edit by Tom Franklin. All between 6 a.m.-10 a.m. These images, still and moving, were going to set the tone for the day on the web site. It was absolutely exciting to see these videos minutes not hours after they were made. I believe our staff made the local election real and compelling for people starting their day. Who knows, it may have inspired some to get out and vote. Oh, and by-the-way, Pedota who had previously scheduled vacation, came in to photograph stills and video of Dick Zimmer. And Liz shot a soccer game too.
